Hubbard won The Foam Company Drop Knee Pipeline Pro contest yesterday at the Banzai Pipeline.
The one-day event was run in clean wave-face heights that ranged from 6 to 12 feet.
"Today was perfect conditions for drop knee," said Hubbard, 27. "And the level of competition is really high, so you had to be at your best in every heat."
When it comes to drop-knee bodyboarding — which requires the competitors to ride bodyboards with a one-knee stance —Hubbard showed why he is regarded as the best in the world.
He is the three-time defending world champion of the drop knee world tour. Last year, he won all three contests on the tour.

The British Bodyboard Club (‘BBC’) are tremendously pleased to announce that once again the Worcestershire based Auto-Sleepers Group are their main sponsors for 2010. This means that the 2010 4-event tour to decide the British Open Champion will be officially called the Auto-Sleepers British Bodyboard Tour.
Speaking from a bleak Edinburgh airport, BBC Chairman Rich Hall said: “This is the 3rd year of the 3 year deal that we agreed with Auto-Sleepers; and it speaks volumes about the company and its management that even in the midst of a global downturn they haven’t turned their back on supporting grass-roots sport.”
He continued “The guys at ASG have been very supportive and their financial backing means that we can continue to roll-out our 3 main objectives for 2010; namely, establishing the tour, developing our young riders and getting more Brits competing internationally”.
The 2010 Auto-Sleepers British Bodyboard Tour comprises 4 events:
March 20-21, Sorted Surf Festival – Boscombe Reef
June 12-13*, Corona Wedge Air Jam – Tolcarne, Newquay
September*, Greenaway Pro – Porthmeor, St Ives
October*, Auto-Sleepers British Nationals – Porthtowan.
* Dates to be confirmed.
Entry forms for the first event are available to download now from http://www.sortedsurfshop.co.uk/ or http://www.britishbodyboardclub.co.uk/ the BBC website also carries more details about the tour including eligibility criteria etc.

Day two of the 2010 Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro presented by Body Glove has been called a lay day due to poor surf conditions.
With back to back swells forecast for the remainder of the waiting period, organisers are happy to hold off until the waves and wind improve.
"We have several surf forecasters helping us make the call each day and all of the models are indicating that conditions are improving from tomorrow" Said Terry Mckenna, IBA General Manager.
"I would imagine that we will have a start later this week and finish in epic conditions next week".

British Bodyboard Club announce mini-tour to decide British Champion.
The British Bodyboard Club are set to launch a tour of 4 events to decide the 2010 Open Champion it was announced today.
Chairman Rich Hall said “the concept of deciding the British Champion via a series of events rather than a single one has been in discussion for some time”.
He continued “the BSA has given us the freedom to explore the options and are quite happy to support us in this; so we’re going to progress the idea this year”.
The 4 proposed events are:
The Sorted Surf Reef competition at Boscombe on March 20-21,
The Tolcarne Wedge Air Jam in July/August
The Greenaway Pro in St Ives in September
The British Nationals at Porthtowan in September/October.
Rich said “we’re going to be teaming up with other organisations and/or competitions initially for 2 of the events; but will be providing the judges and backup to ‘sanction’ those competitions.
The first 3 events will be scored as regular events with 500 points for the winner, whilst the Nationals will be an IBA style ‘grand-slam’ event with 1,000 points available.”
If the experiment is successful, the plan will be to roll out the tour to wider geographical venues in 2011.
The Nationals event will still decide the age and discipline divisions, with the usual entry restrictions.
The events will be open to all comers, but only those eligible to enter the British Nationals can accrue points towards becoming the Open British Championship.

Check out the footage of last week’s comp. England narrowly suffered a loss at the hands of the experienced French team but didn’t disgrace themselves by any stretch. If you haven’t got much time check out from 5.30 onwards. It’s Pierre Louis Costes v’s Prisky. As you can see by his backflip and ARS on one wave, the standard was pretty high! Thanks to the sponsors of the British team; Brittany Ferries, NMD, VS and Rob Barber’s Bodyboarding School

The first Anglo-French Challenge between the French Surfing Federation and the British Bodyboard Club went off in superb style in Quiberon this weekend. The French put out a very strong team including 2009 French tour winner Sylvain Langlet and Pierre-Louis Costes, currently 6th in the IBA World Tour and in contention for the world title.
The British Team (sponsored by Brittany Ferries, Rob Barber’s Bodyboard School and NMD) consisted of Damian Prisk, Danny Catten and Danny Wall in the Open section; with U19s Dave Speller and Cian Salmon completing the junior section.
The competition was held over two days in Quiberon in South Brittany; on the Côte Sauvage break of Port Bara. Saturday afternoon saw a stormy onshore 7ft swell, and a lack of familiarity with the break may have seen the downfall of the British team. Their French counterparts showed better wave selection in the difficult conditions, and raced into an early 5-0 lead in the man-on-man format. Though a number of heats were close, the French riders were the ones hitting the critical sections more cleanly to impress the judges.
The second and third rounds held on Sunday morning saw a determined British squad hit the water. Conditions were cleaner and bigger than on Saturday, and with some experience under their belts combined with direction from team coach Rob Barber, they were quickly back in contention.
A convincing win from Salmon over the diminutive Max Castillo (look out for Castillo in the coming seasons though – the lad shows a maturity and style beyond his years) got the Brits on the scoreboard. Dan Catten was neck and neck with Langlet in the next heat when the man from Hossegor picked up the wave of the round - a long pealing left. The Frenchman ignored two makeable sections in favour of down the line speed and pulled off a huge invert as the wave closed out and nailed the heat.

Wall and Prisk both took wins in the second and third rounds respectively to advance the British tally. Prisk’s score in his final heat was the second highest score of the weekend; with the French head judge Olivier Etchebers saying: “His ARS was just perfect, and his re-entry reverse was massive”.
However, the quality of the French riding was epitomised by Costes who remained unbeaten through the two days. His third round heat against Catten produced the ride of the day and saw him pull off a back-flip and ARS on the same wave for the highest score of the event.
The French eventually took the competition 10-3 but were magnanimous in victory, acknowledging how close many of the heats had been. The return leg will be held on British shores in 2010/2011.
The BBC would like to thank Olivier Etchebers of the FFS and Yannick Allançon of the Spirit Surf Club for their hospitality; along with Brittany Ferries, Rob Barbers Bodyboard School and NMD for their kind support.

Report
Portugal's Manuel Centeno and Catarina Sousa won the bodyboard divisions at Eurosurf 2009, hosted by the Jersey Surfboard Club as part of the their 50th anniversary.
The bodyboarders faced some tough conditions for much of the event, with most of the rounds taking place in 1ft surf, with the exception of the quarter final round, which went off in 4ft strong onshores.
The first of the bodyboard finals was dominated by Sousa, who worked her waves well with tidy spins and some good rolls. 2nd spot went to Deva Solar, ahead of Ireland's Ashleigh Smith in 3rd and Wales Gemma Harris 4th.
The mens final saw a good battle between Centeno and French bodyboarder Martin Mouradian, who both found a little more boost in their manoeuvres then their competitors. Centeno just having the edge. 3rd spot went to Spain's Guillermo Cobo, with Hugo Pinheiro in 4th.

The British Bodyboard Club is pleased to announce that Brittany Ferries are now the official sponsors of the British team competing in the Anglo-French challenge in Quiberon, Brittany on the 24-25th October.
Dan Joynes, Business Development Executive for Brittany Ferries said: “We were really keen to support the British team as we know so many bodyboarders and surfers travel with us when on surf missions to France and Spain”. He continued, “the fabulous breaks of Brittany are bypassed by lots of Brit surfers making their way down to Hossegor – they really don’t know what they’re missing! We wish the British team the best of luck as they take on their French counterparts”.
The Anglo-French challenge pits the top ranked French and British riders against each other in a head-to-head contest. The British team taking on the Frenchmen on their own turf is Damien Prisk (ranked #1, 2008), Danny Wall (ranked #3), Dave Spellar (#1 Junior 2008), and Dan Catten (2009 British Open champion). Rich Hall from the British Bodyboard Club said “it’s a great line-up for us, maybe the best team that we’ve ever taken away to an overseas competition. We’re expecting the FFS (French surfing Federation) to pull out all the stops to get their IBA tour guys like Amaury Lavernhe and Pierre-Louis Costes to compete, so it should be a cracking competition”.
The team travels with Brittany Ferries on Friday 23rd with the event taking place over the weekend of 24th- 25th and coinciding with the French bodyboard film festival,
http://festivalbodyboard.free.fr/festivalbodyboard.free.fr/accueil.html. British videographers can enter the festival, with the only restriction being the length of the video which must be between 5 and 10 minutes duration.

Auto-Sleepers British Bodyboard Nationals hits new high
The 2009 BSA/BBC Auto-Sleepers British Bodyboard Nationals were completed over the weekend, with impressive performances across all divisions and a new National Champion crowned.
With highly contestable waves all weekend at Porthtowan, the cream of British bodyboarding ripped the conditions apart in pursuit of the biggest prize pot in European national championship competition. The highlight was the Open and Drop Knee finals, with the winners needing near perfect scores to win.
The Women’s and age category divisions (Cadet – Under 16, Junior – Under 18, Senior – Over 28 and Masters – Over 35) were all completed on Saturday in two- to three-foot conditions. The Porthtowan banks were producing an abundance of open faces and rampy sections, so there was no shortage of opportunity for the competitors to strut their stuff.
The Under 16s saw Stephen Hall battle through the heats to successfully defend his title. Sam Newby upped his game to finish a creditable second, with Olly Bayliss third and James Moores fourth.
The Under 18s ultimately produced a memorable contest between Stephen Hall and Cian Salmon. These two, along with Luke Brabyn, dominated their respective early round heats and were clear favourites in the final. Jarryd Wingfield secured the last final berth with a late combo in his semi to progress. As it was, it was the looping el-rollos of Salmon that caught the judges’ eye in the final and secured the victory. Hall came second after a series of good combination moves but was missing any eye-catching moves above the lip line; he narrowly beat Brabyn into third and Wingfield into fourth place.
The Seniors saw current Welsh champion Mark ‘Splinter’ Griffiths qualify for the Over 28 division for the first time; and the diminutive former WSG representative saw off stiff competition to clinch the win. The Senior’s division produced the stand out surfing of the day through the heats, and saw Bjorn Storey, Dan Catten and Eldred Hawke (fresh from his victory in the Greenaway Pro competition the previous day) join Griffiths in the final. With the biggest waves of the day three-foot sets offered some high-performance lefthand rides as the tide pushed in. Splint secured victory with three big outside rolls on one wave; the judges all scored the ride in the excellent range.
The Masters final saw a tussle between Porthtowan locals Eldred Hawke and Danny Catten and the Jersey contingent of Colin Crowther and Simon Watkins. Eldred boosted a tight ARS that saw him lead for the back half of the heat with the lead passed from one to the other of the local boys with some high scoring exchanges . In the dying minutes Dan Cattern snatched victory with a long left that reformed back right and offered a string of fast carving spins.
The Women’s final saw a commanding performance from reigning champion Gemma Britton, who within five minutes of the heat starting had nailed two fast spins on a wave which gave her an unassailable lead. Olivia Smedley was hot on her heels with some nice carving turns and some good forward spins. Tabby Fox was surfing well and challenging for second until she came unstuck on one ride and got caught in a rip current to the righthand side of the contest area which kept her busy for the second half of the heat. Christine Blackburn showed good promise for the future and placed fourth. Gemma Britton is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the Women’s division, it will be interesting to see how she fares against Clemi Hardy, who missed this event due to travel commitments.
The perfect conditions on Sunday saw the Drop Knee heats and final run off in three- to four-foot left and right breaking peaks. Aidan Salmon took an early lead with a strong forehand floater and as the 30 minute final moved on the right handers were the waves that offered the best scores as the tide came on to an excellent sandbank. Danny Wall smashed an excellent reverse off the lip and stole the lead only to be usurped by an incredible performance from Laurie McCall. He scored a perfect 10 point ride followed by a 9.5 for a tight snap followed by a floater then another big floater on the following wave. Remi Geffroy left the heat early in order to save himself for the Open final which followed shortly afterwards. McCall took the award for the best performance of the event and won the much sought after BZ Yamo custom board.
The Open final was stacked with three generations of top British bodyboarders — elder statesman Danny Catten, the grand master Damian Prisk and newer schoolers Remi Geffroy and Jack Johns. Prisk opened his account early with a move-filled wave that ended with a big ARS that he was unlucky not to land as the wave reformed. Jack Johns was surfing with a silky-smooth style but lacked any big moves above the lip line. Remi Geffroy looked tired after making the second major final of the event. Other than a wave with three rolls on it he seemed a little lost in the three- to four-foot peaks. Catten found his rhythm 10 minutes into the heat with a set wave that included a barrel roll, a cuttie reverse then a big invert air on the inside. The judges threw him a 10 and he spent the next 10 minutes waiting patiently for a back up wave. After another big outside roll and combo packed inside connection the title and a cheque for £1,000 were his.
The event was a great success with an excellent standard of riding. Conversations on the beach suggest that it was the best British National Championships ever. Roll on next year.
The British Bodyboard Club would like to thank the Auto-Sleeper Group for their continuing support as main sponsor of the event alongside divisional sponsors Alder Wetsuits, Assured Highway Solutions, The Beach Hotel Porthtowan, Collection House, C W Harwood, NMD, Rob Barber’s Bodyboard School and ThreeSixty. With a potential date overlap between the bodyboard division of the Greenaway Pro in St Ives (4-5 September) and the Auto-Sleepers British Nationals at Porthtowan (5-6 September); the organisers of both competitions are co-ordinating their efforts to avoid a clash.
The bodyboard division of the Greenaway comp will now be held on Friday 4th September; leaving competitors free to compete in both this and the Nationals on 5-6 September.
Rich Hall from the British Bodyboard Club (‘BBC’) said “We recognise that the Greenaway Pro is a unique event, and that Tom had a lot of friends in both the sponge and stand-up surf communities”. He continued “A lot of guys want to remember Tom by entering the memorial competition, so we’re pleased that we’ve been able to reach this accommodation”.
Matt Smith organiser of the Greenaway Pro said “we’ve had a lot of interest from the bodyboarders, so it was unfortunate to have the date conflict. This was a sensible compromise that should allow everyone to do both comps if they want to.”
In the spirit of goodwill, the BBC have agreed that should the bodyboard division of the Greenaway Pro not run to completion on the Friday; any competitors who are still in the competition but have entered the Nationals will be permitted to check in by text or by phone on Saturday morning rather than in person at Porthtowan – thereby enabling them to complete the St Ives event first thing on Saturday and then head straight to Porthtowan for the Nationals.
Rich Hall said “We wouldn’t normally bend the established protocols like this, but we recognise the contribution Tom made to the sponge community and want to honour his memory”.

Added to the prize pot is the chance to win a custom BZ board shaped exclusively for the winner by American shaper Yamo. The prospect of having a board sculpted to their own specifications will go to the best individual rider performance in the Nationals.
This could be awarded for an outstanding individual manoeuvre or a stand-out divisional performance. The winner will be invited to offer their specs for the board and it should be done and delivered in time for Christmas.
Matt Woodruffe, Director of TKC Sales Ltd who distribute BZ and Morey into the UK said, “We’re really pleased to be able to contribute to the Nationals in this way as it’s the highlight of the UK bodyboard calendar. The fact that this prize was open to all the divisions was a bonus for us”.

Auto-Sleepers 2009 British Bodyboard Championships gathers pace
Following fast on the heels of the Wedge Air Jam, the 2009 Auto-Sleepers British Bodyboard championships at Porthtowan is rapidly approaching.
With a bumper prize purse again of £3,000 thanks to Auto-Sleepers and the other generous divisional sponsors, the British bodyboard Nationals are amongst the most hotly contested national championships in Europe; and the only ones to offer cash prizes across all eight divisions – from Youth through to Masters.
After some classic warm weather swells in 2009, hopes are high that the late summer date of 5-6 September will again produce the goods and deliver a competition to remember. Rich Hall, of organisers the British Bodyboard Club said: “Last year’s Nationals were a great event. It has become a real focal point of the UK bodyboarding calendar and has drawn in all the top competitors”.
He continued “the fact that we offer a substantial prize purse gives all our guys something to focus on. The better the purse, the better the field. The better the field, the more spectators it pulls in. This is turn supports the local businesses that sponsor us as well as the National ones”.

Tolcarne beach, Cornwall, lived up to its reputation as one of the UK’s premier bodyboarding venues on Sunday, with 20 of the best UK-based bodyboarders busting out big aerial moves in pumping five-foot conditions.
The Wedge Air Jam competition (co-sponsored by Corona, The Kahuna restaurant and Overhead Surf) and the English Surfing Federation Tag Team Championships (sponsored by Rob Barber’s Bodyboarding School and ThreeSixty Magazine) served up a feast of bodyboarding excellence.

The competitions ran back-to-back to exploit the best conditions and more than 125 spectators braved the incessant summer rain to watch the spectacle unfold.
The Tag Team event is held each year to raise funds for the English team, who will be competing in the European Surfing Championships in Jersey in September. Five teams battled it out, with reigning champions Rob Barber’s Bodyboarding School (Aidan Salmon, Bjorn Storey, Joe Franklin and Rob Barber) taking the title again. Joe Franklin scored the highest single wave score after an excellent combination of spins and an aerial roll. Team Plymouth placed second.

The surf picked up with the incoming tide and by the start of the Wedge Air Jam the sets were touching six feet. Flowing power moves abounded in the early rounds, and as the tide drew in the competitors were whittled down to the last six for a hectic 30-minute final just as the Wedge started to fire.

Newquay ex-pat Remi Geffroy snagged some early cross-wave bombs to take an early lead, but was pegged back by Plymouth’s Bjorn Storey surfing the righthand peak and Danny Wall sitting deep and picking off the lefts on the bigger sets. Newquay local Rob Barber utilised his local knowledge to snag some of the best pure Wedge waves and chuck in his trademark inverts to score well.

Penzance’s Jack Johns struggled to catch the waves to replicate his dominant semi-final performance and Truro’s Alex Winkworth — who was an early favourite — just failed to land a couple of outstanding manoeuvres.

In the end it was the all-action style of Geffroy that best mastered the conditions to take the title, with Danny Wall second, Rob Barber third and Bjorn Story fourth. Alex Winkworth was five and Jack Johns came in sixth.

The event after-party was held at the C-Bar at the Carnmarth Hotel and saw revellers party until the early hours. The British Bodyboard Club would like to thank headline sponsors Corona, The Kahuna restaurant and Overhead Surf along with sub-sponsors Discipull and Prone Clothing. The ESF would like to thank all the contest organisers, judges etc. for giving their time and effort for free.

Tolcarne Wedge Air Jam Now On Sunday 26th
All
With the swell on Saturday due to drop off we have to consider the possibility of moving the competition. Sunday’s conditions look much more favourable, and so what is being considered at the moment is moving the event to Sunday evening. Whilst this is not ideal for a number of reasons, what it does mean is that the competitors and spectators who have already made arrangements to be in Newquay this weekend will not be disappointed.
Therefore in order to maximise everyone’s return our thoughts are:
1. Change the ‘after-party’ at the Kahuna to a ‘pre-event’ party on Saturday evening and make it the meeting place for all the bbers and spectators who will already be in Newquay.
2. Run the ESF bodyboard tag team event from 2pm Sunday on Tolcarne
3. Run the Wedge comp 5.30 – 8.30 Sunday.
4. Have an abridged presentation at the Kahuna Sunday evening, allowing the ESF bodyboard tag team event competitors to attend the BBQ at the Carnmarth hotel afterwards.
We appreciate that it is a compromise, and is dependant on the goodwill of all involved. However we need good conditions to run credible events; and the best conditions look like they will be available on Sunday.
Thanks for your understanding.

3rd - £25 cash, £20 Overhead Surf voucher, Discipull & Prone clothing.
4th - £20 cash, £20 Overhead Surf voucher, Discipull & Prone clothing.
The prize giving will take place immediately after the finish of the competition which will then trigger the after party at the Kahuna right on Tolcarne beach; where the Corona will be flowing!

The event is open to EVERYONE, whether you are ripping it up around the globe or just want to try something new.

The event is being held on July 12th at Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall in association with Rob Barbers Bodyboard School (www.robbarber.com - 01637 879 571) and supported by Three Sixty Magazine (www.orcasurf.co.uk/threesixty) - starting at 10am, meeting at the Carnmarth Hotel.
We are actively seeking more sponsorship and funding for the event.
There is loads of great stuff lined up for the day – a morning coaching session to kick the day with our event photographer and videographer with a video analysis session afterwards.
